Back in 1974, Pierre Bensusan was cutting his teeth as a performer on the folk scene in Paris and other cities in France when one of his idols, banjo great Bill Keith, offered him his first official paying gig ever touring Western Europe with his bluegrass band. The French-Algerian upstart, humbly launching a four decade career which would earn him worldwide renown as the “Mozart of Guitar,” was hired to play mandolin. But when Keith heard his groundbreaking approach to the acoustic guitar, he decided to allow Bensusan a few key spotlights on that instrument. Decades later, when Bensusan was looking for potential finishing touches for “Encore”, his ambitious and expansive retrospective collection celebrating 40 years as a globetrotting live performer, he discovered a reel to reel tape with a Swiss National Radiorecording of a concert in Lausanne from that tour. While the tireless troubadour’s original plan for the 3-CD set was to include tracks recorded between 1998 and 2013 in France, Canada, Ireland, Austria and especially the U.S. (where he regularly records), Bensusan decided to round out the 35-track set by starting “Disc 2” with a set of five titles from this show, including two bluegrass songs. The basis of Tukkimans compositions in the TUKKI album is the acoustic guitar, his primary instrument. It is layered over the assiko «urban» drum, dispersed throughout and accompanied by cello or double bass. In these songs, he skillfully combines singing and rap fused between pop, rock and African rhythms. The desire is to convey a message of freedom and an optimistic vision of Africa. The album title, TUKKI, means to travel and focuses on the migration of peoples and the fusion of cultures, especially musically. Tukkiman believes in a world without borders and the ability to travel being an indespensible source of richness and freedom. Today’s political restrictions prevent freedom of movement. Fortunately, music stands on its own in its limitless mobility. This is the voice of Tukkiman in the songs Tukki and We Will Survive – both considered to be an ode to immigrants. Let’s rock to this is a joyful blend of rock and rap, composed by Tukkiman upon his arrival to Europe. While working regularly within the U.S. between Chicago and New York, he observed the pressure of work, money and notoriety. Take Me High is the cry of those who want to achieve this American Dream. Louisa Baileche’s passion for music dates back from her childhood when her mother was singing traditionnal Italian songs, when his brothers and their friends were playing guitars and darboukas, echoing to the Algerian origins of her father. Louisa started singing in the venues of Paris in the early 2000’s, performing with rock bands or singing French chanson, while taking classical vocal classes at the Music Conservatory. Her new album Terra Mia, recorded in 2014 with the complicity of composer and arranger Laurent Roussel, is the creation of a project she’s been carrying in her soul for ever, celebrating her Italian roots. « Terra mia is a memory of which I am guardian… and queen, the cradle of the emotions which animated me and raised! Rebetiko is haunted with stories of sailors and convicts, tearful love affairs and haschish dreams, cheeky hints and exile without return. This proteiform music style came about in the early 20th century in the often-infamous cafés of Greek and Turkish port towns. It is a fascinating repertoire, somewhere between sentimental song, social protest and Eastern poetry. A Greek singer living in Marseille and a member of the musical band Oneira, Maria Simoglou has chosen thirteen rebetiko pieces that she especially cherishes. Backed up by musicians of her generation –Stratis Pasaradellis on lyra, lafta and saz, Periklis Papapetropoulos on lafta and saz, Harris Lambrakis on the ney flute, Stephanos Dorbarakison the kanun zither and Kostas Meretakis on percussion– she has sought to really recreate these tunes. From the acoustic sound of traditional instruments, new arrangements draw timeless accents that perfectly befit this restless music that cannot be reduced to any kind of framework, whether historical (rebetiko has never ceased to be played and sung) or geographical (on the Eastern Mediterranean shores, ports tend to come and go). A whole world is revived with precision and instrumental subtelty: a profuse world, at the same time coarse and oneiric, full of ambiguity and innuendo, seduction and mischief. Né à Douala au Cameroun, SAM’M (Samuel MBAPPE), passe son adolescence à Foumban, ville artisanale située à l’ouest du Cameroun, dans les montagnes du vieux royaume Bamoun. Les années Foumban marquent le début de sa vie d’artiste. SAM’M est fortement inspiré par les chansons qui ont bercé son enfance. Il écoute alors tous les grands de l’époque, qui forgent son ouverture d’esprit, (Earl KLUGH, Al JAREAU, Georges Benson, B.B KING, Sadao WATANABE, Myriam MAKEBA, Fela, Manu DIBANGO, Nat KING COLE, Bob MARLEY, Francis BEBEY, Charles EWANDJE) et tant d’autres grands musiciens et paroliers, qui sont pour SAM’M, des références aussi éclectiques qu’incontournables.  Il crée le groupe SA’KHARE dans les années 1990 et signe un premier album qui mêle retour aux sources et sonorités jazz. Quelques années plus tard, il quitte le Cameroun pour s’installer à Paris. Il s’inscrit alors au Conservatoire en guitare jazz, afin de peaufiner sa technique instrumentale et d’enrichir ses connaissances. Le sourire aux lèvres, toujours attentif et observateur, c’est avec charme et poésie qu’il parle de ses influences musicales : « Tout me parle, je tends l’oreille et l’univers murmure…» SAM’M est auteur, compositeur, arrangeur, et interprète des 11 titres de l’album (excepté un titre, arrangé par Etienne MBAPPE). Son nouvel album « OA NA MBA », très éclectique, est le fruit de plusieurs années de réflexion. Avec ses 14 musiciens de talent, SAM’M y explore l’univers de la World Music, du Jazz, de la Folk, qu’il mélange à des rythmes et chants africains SAWA (Essèwè, Ambass-bey et Ngosso) avec des couleurs latines. KUKU valorously expresses his critical perspective on the dogma of organized religion, politics, and oppressive authorities on his new opus. Hailing from a moderately religious family and a former Muslim himself, these days, KUKU adopts an agnostic view in regards to religion. He advocates that there is no correlation between morality and religion. Some believers will be quick to oppose this view, perhaps some might find it blasphemous, hence to save them the trouble KUKU appropriately titles the album “Ballads & Blasphemy.” On songs like “Open Your Eyes While You Pray” he warns believers and followers to be vigilant of the corruption and malevolence of religion and authority. On “Evil Doers” he questions the omnipresence of God while evil perpetrators are at work. The Tony Allen inflected “Owó” talks about humanity’s addiction to the concept of money. Alongside KUKU, Ballad & Blasphemy was co-produced by South African guitarist Mongezi Ntaka (Lucky Dube, Hugh Masakela). Afrobeat co-creator and drummer Tony Allen blesses two titles on the album. Drummer and composer Cyril Atef of CongopunQ’s is featured on the song “Open Your eyes While You Pray.” Cameroonian bassist extraordinare Hilaire Penda adds his special seasoning to a few titles, and French guitarist Misja Fitzgerald Michel is featured on the album’s pensive final track. This debut album was made in April 2014 in the village Petite Rivière Bayonnais, close to the lakou of Souvenance where the drum-maker Charles Simé lives. Recorded under the cover of an ajoupa open to the winds, these 15 tracks bear the marks of daily village life and carry the flame of a cosmopolitan African inheritance. Born into a family of griots, Samba Diabaté learnt the balafon at a young age before he was introduced him to the art of the guitar and jeli n’goni. He is now one of the most sought-after guitarists on the Malianscene. For the Swiss multi-instrumentalist and world-music specialist Vincent Zanetti, the Malian Mande is his land of adoption. “In 2011, when we created our duo and repertoire, Samba and myself called it ‘Kala Jula’ (the nomadic archer) as a tribute to the ancestor of the Diabate griots. But a part of his byname was missing. Ils présenteront à cette occasion leur nouvel album « Le Fruit du bazar » (sortie le 26/05 chez Quart de Lune / Rue Stendhal). Le fil conducteur de cet opus intitulé « Le Fruit du bazar » est le texte subtil et imagé. Une écriture invariablement soignée au service de thèmes légers ou plus cyniques. Ces textes sont aérés en milieu d’album par une composition instrumentale, une « Ballade en montagne » qui se déroule le long de la frontière entre jazz et musique classique. Les frontières, le groupe s'en moque et voyage d'un style musical à l’autre. C’est ainsi que l’album passe des sonorités jazz 1930 à un reggae roots ou un funk acoustique, juste avant de finir sur une musique aux échos de Georges Brassens. Les débuts de « Bazar & Bémols » dans le métro parisien ont éveillé la curiosité des médias locaux (Le Parisien), nationaux (Arte) ou étrangers (Rolling Stone Balkans). Ils sont vite sortis de terre pour semer leurs chansons au détour de quelque 350 concerts.
