Gino Sitson presents « VoiStrings »

Award-winning, New York-based vocal virtuoso Gino Sitson is originally from the Bamileke region of Cameroon, Central Africa. His family comes from a long line of musicians known as Ntontas(“players of horns”) and his mother is a vocalist and choir director. He and his siblings were introduced to blues, jazz and African traditional music early in life. Mr. Sitson is a pioneer of a new generation of multi-culturally influenced African musicians who are integrating into their musical styles their own exciting yet bewildering welter of “in-between” living experiences (north/south, tradition/modernity, 20th/21st century). His daring musical project combines in a most innovative way jazz, gospel, blues and traditional African polyphonies, polyrhythms and melodies. By freely combining his trademark vocal acrobatics with a breathtakingly creative command of oral and body percussions and miscellaneous effects, Mr. Sitson forged an eloquent vocabulary capable of communicating far beyond any limits of language or custom. Through his vocal wizardry, he stunningly creates an endless range of sounds and atmospheres. Sitson’s seamless four-octave range travels from a soulful, resonantly masculine tenor with woodwind-like overtones to a high-soaring, nearly genderless spiritual wail, a feat that recalls Brazil’s Milton Nascimento, another deep-rooted yet restlessly protean, jazz-inflected shape-changer. Gino Sitson’s four-octave vocal range plus his skills as a composer and arranger put him in high demand for recording sessions and for commercials and radio / television jingles (Danone, Dim, Peugeot, Vahine, etc). The versatile young vocalist performed in a musical and co-composed part of the music (Jeanne et le Garçon Formidable). He has laid down tracks or shared the stage with Manu Dibango, Ron Carter, Papa Wemba, Wally Badarou, John Scofield, Geri Allen, David Gilmore, Haruko Nara, Bobby McFerrin, Frank Wess, Ray Lema, Craig Harris, James Hurt, Antoine Roney, John William, Mario Canonge, Wallace Roney, Brice Wassy, Oliver NGoma, Exile One, Steve Potts, So Why? (Featuring Youssou NDour, Papa Wemba, Wally Badarou, Jabu Khanyile & Bayete, Lourdes Van-Dunem, and Lucky Dube) and La Compagnie Creole, among others. In 2008, Mr. Sitson was invited by Bobby McFerrin to take part in a special project that took place at the Carnegie Hall (“Instant Opera”). He appeared in the 2009 PBS documentary film “The Music Instinct: Science and Song”, featuring Bobby McFerrin, Daniel Levitin, Oliver Sacks, Daniel Barenboim, and Yo-Yo Ma. A member of Chamber Music America, he is regularly engaged for movie scores and commercials. He has also appeared several times on TV and also composed music for the noted children’s TV show, Dora The Explorer (Nickelodeon). Since 2006, Mr. Sitson is a Cultural Arts ambassador for the city of Miami (Florida). Meanwhile, his international career continues apace. He has received the “Parents Choice Silver Medal Honor Award” in 2004 and was nominated for the RFI Awards 2000 (Finalist “Decouvertes RFI” 2000). His recent output includes soundtracks to Betrayal (Kevin Ngooh), Blue Lotus (Dayo Ayodele) and Koming from Afrika (Blaise-Christian Sitchet); jingles for France Television and France 3. Mr. Sitson performed at the Carnegie Hall with his own group in 2008. Aside from musical performances, Gino leads vocal workshops served by his amazing vocal technique, his musical knowledge and his desire to share his love for vocal explorations. Gino has developed workshops for professional as well as non-professional singers, and also for children. A researcher in musicology, his work focuses on music cognition, expressive properties of the voice and the process of transmitting music from the “black” diaspora. Among them, he is particularly interested in Gwoka music from Guadeloupe. Mr Sitson earned a PhD in musicology at the Paris-Sorbonne University. He is a UNICEF CAMEROON Goodwill Ambassador. ****** INFORMATION Website: Ginositson.com Facebook: Ginositson1 Soundcloud: Voistrings

Fabrice Devienne presents “Dipenda”

The “Dipenda” album keeps the commitment of words from the original musical creation for the play “A Season in the Congo” by Aimee Cesaire. Those Marc Zinga, Belgian artist from the Congo, who lends his voice to the project, and those course Aimee Cesaire who pays tribute album. The music itself, like “pollen fire” offers a subtle range between light and rich harmonies and both African and Cuban rhythms just waiting to ignite. The extreme proximity of these rhythms reminds us of their historical relationship. Fabrice Devienne, such a stage director, did it effectively. We travel in Europe, Africa and Cuba in the space of this magic triangle elaborated by the pianist. Dipenda invites us to travel, over oceans and continents, but also at the heart of each song. Thus, “Mti Umeoza” gives us the velvety vocals of a female voice, doubled in places by lyrical cello, opening the exchange to jazz piano improvisations. Furthermore, where the flute doubles the Rhodes rise mixed reminiscences of Ultramarine or Fal Frett. Yet it’s in “The song of Pauline” we can feel better the dramaturgical treatment of musical time. Helped by a string quartet of great finesse, Devienne here reminds us all his work on film music. “Vienna rainy season” does not derogate from this construction. The choirs of women sound like a prayer in the middle of expectation filled with hope. Finally comes the issuance of notes under the beneficent rain of a piano that seems to also regain his freedom. If “Dipenda” is an album that stays true to the power of words and the commitment of Césaire, it also makes a wonderful tribute, by the accuracy of his music, the great poet that was the man. YO eNKO presents “Des coups de poing”

Sorry, this entry is only available in FR. For the sake of viewer convenience, the content is shown below in the alternative language. Awa Ly EP

Once upon a night, Awa had a dream… Taking place in an enchanted and somewhat mystical atmosphere, haloed in a scenography summoning the moon, the earth and the elements. A shamanic female with an ancestral blend between Native Americansand Africa was there, speaking in an unknown language, telling stories, some real some fantasized. She would receive those tales from others, would make them hers, would get soaked in them, shared their joy, eased the pain or sadness contained. Upon awakening, the Shamanic narrator had vanished but her presence had remained palpable, Awa made her the storyteller of this new album: Five and a Feather. Five, like all these things counted as five: the senses, the oceans, the lines of a staff, the fingers of a hand … and Feather, the feather, that magical element that connects all, the one Awa used to write and compose the ten tracks of this album, in which, through SainaSix’s brushes, she became the first black woman immortalized in the aesthetics of Mucha’s Art Nouveau. Ten tracks that take you back to the vinyl records Awa used to listen in the family room, when soul, blues, African music and Afro-Cuban orchestras harbored her childhood. Although she has chosen the jazz velvety path, Awa has however decided to alter it, choosing to adorn it with folk motifs, or letting guests leave their marks. Ballaké Sissoko’s kora, Paco Sery’s senza, Greg Cohen’s double bass, Faada Freddy’s singing, the steel-guitar or erhu (Chinese violin) are the many elements that illuminate the tales of the shamanic storyteller. Produced along with the duo Jean Lamoot and Pascal Danae (Victoires de la Musique 2015, World Music category with their band Rivière Noire. Collaborations with Black Desire, Bashung, Salif Keita, Gainsbourg, Giberto Gil, Peter Gabriel, Ayo, Mayra Andrade) Five and a Featherreproduces the warm atmosphere of captured live sessions where the instruments meet, interlock and build up the haven that will host the main instrument of this album: Awa’s voice. These words she gently places or drops over keys such as tears of either joy or sadness, flowing from this source called love. The one love we’d like to feel again someday but known gone forever. The one that is born, suffocates and on the verge of dying out until a saving breath comes to the rescue. The one we have for a dear one such as a friend (Friendship). “Let Me Love You” and its love that drives one crazy, the declaration at its purest “Will You Be Mine” (the only song is not coming from Awa’s magic but written by the mystic Slow Joe) or Here, a duet with Faada Freddy, where the loving your neighbor message strangely echoes with the plight of migrants who perish at sea; passionate, destructive, disappointed, romantic, universal: love is the main theme of Five and a Feather. An album, composed and recorded as a thin lace dotted with details that will only be revealed to the one able to unveil them.
