Multi instrumentalist and composer René Aubry presents his 26th album: « Chaos »
René Aubry is a multi instrumentalist and a composer for dance and theatre performances as well as for the cinema. He is a creator of unique sound atmospheres,
a lone composer who can design ambiances as well as inspired melodies with an insatiable thirst for freedom. His work radiates true originality and an unmistakable singularity.
Born in les Vosges (France) in 1956, he is an admirer of, among others, Leonard Cohen, Philip Glass and Manos Hadjidakisa, and a self-taught guitarist. His meeting with Carolyn Carlson in 1978 was a turning point for his artistic career. He fell in love with Dance as an artform, with the dancer herself and became her regular composer. Inspired by her work, he composed his first pieces for Ballet.
The collaboration, which is still on-going, gave birth to many performances including « Blue Lady » (1983), « Steppe » (1990) and « Signes » (1997), and was crowned by a victoire de la Musique in 1998. He recorded his first album in Venice where he lived from 1981 to 1984.
20 other albums have followed, recorded between 1988 and 2013.
These albums include hints of his collaboration with C. Carlson and with the puppet master Philippe Genty, film soundtracks, but also his personal sound experiments ranging from raw and minimalist acoustic melodies (« Plaisirs d’Amour » « Invités sur la Terre »), to darker and more intimate works (« Seuls au Monde » « Mémoires du Futur » « Refuges »). They are the result of a unique chemistry between unplugged instruments, electronic sounds and computer programming music.
World-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch even used some of his melodies for three of her performances : « Ten Chi (2004)», « Vollmond (2006) » and « Sweet Mambo » (2008), as well as Wim Wenders for the soundtrack of his feature film ‘Pina’.
Since 1999 he has also started a stage career and performs a repertoire of mostly acoustic melodies across Europe with his Septet ensemble. Between 2009 and 2012 he also composed soundtracks for 3 films commissioned by the BBC and produced by Magic Light Pictures: «The Gruffalo », « The Gruffalo’s Child » and « Room On The Broom ».
All 3 films were awarded the “Crystal” for the best TV production at Annecy Film Festival.
« The Gruffalo » was nominated for the Oscars in the category Short Animation Film.
