Akiko Horii (percussion) and Jim Funnell (keyboards) have a special creative connection characterized by an instinctive approach to their music and an almost telepathic way of interacting on stage. Their unified voice sounds large and full and is driven by pure primal energy, while still retaining an acoustic and transparent quality.
AfuriKo has released two albums since 2014, both of which were chosen to receive full funding by SACEM, the French Society of Authors, Composers, and Music Publishers. They have toured extensively in Japan (Kanazawa Jazz Street), the UK (Cardiff University Concert Hall), France, Germany (JazzLab), Holland, Nepal (Jazzmandu), the United States, and collaborated with artists such as Bill Sims, Jr., Eddie Parker, Bruno Wilhelm, Hiroshi Fukutomi, and Chris Hayward.
They are currently working on a 3rd album (to be released in 2019), which will crystallize their recent adventures and encounters. Experiences that highly transformed both the tandem’s life and music – such as being on the road for a full year (Japan, Nepal, Europe) and finally settling down in New York City – have been nourishing their creative process. Currently performing in and around their new hometown, AfuriKo is also gearing up for their upcoming Europe tour in the summer…
