Dany\u00e8l Waro<\/strong><\/a> has always stayed faithful to the acoustic tradition of Maloya<\/strong>, the blues of the island of R\u00e9union<\/strong>, and he is recognized as its \u201chero\u201d. As a musician<\/strong> and poet<\/strong>, he sings Creole<\/strong> with unparalleled emotion: \u201cMaloya<\/strong>, for me, is first and foremost about the word,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m looking for the cadence, the image, the rhythm in the word. Maloya<\/strong>has put me in touch with R\u00e9union<\/strong>, with its people, with our language.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Richard Robert<\/strong> wrote in Les InRocKuptibles<\/strong>: \u201cThe sudden rage and the sharp wisdom of his texts combine in a form of trance that is experienced not as an escape, a deliberate and controlled loss of mind and senses, but on the contrary as the search for a higher consciousness, uniting thought, word and gesture into a single impulse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dany\u00e8l Waro hadn\u2019t set foot in the studio since the release in 2010 of Aou Amwin<\/strong> (Grand Prix of the Acad\u00e9mie Charles Cros<\/strong>), the year of his WOMEX Artist Award<\/strong> (following Staff Benda Bilili, Andy Palacio, Toto la Monposina or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) and his new album, monmon<\/strong> (the lower-case \u201cm\u201d is deliberate as it is not only for his own mother but for all \u201cmonmons<\/strong>\u201d), resonates with all the spirituality and commitment of this outstanding artist.<\/p>\n
