Back in 1974, Pierre Bensusan<\/strong> was cutting his teeth as a performer on the folk scene in Paris<\/strong> and other cities in France<\/strong> when one of his idols, banjo great Bill Keith<\/strong>, offered him his first official paying gig ever touring Western Europe<\/strong> with his bluegrass band. The French-Algerian<\/strong> upstart, humbly launching a four decade career which would earn him worldwide renown as the \u201cMozart of Guitar,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> was hired to play mandolin<\/strong>. But when Keith<\/strong> heard his groundbreaking approach to the acoustic guitar, he decided to allow Bensusan<\/strong> a few key spotlights on that instrument.<\/p>\n

Decades later, when Bensusan<\/strong> was looking for potential finishing touches for \u201c<\/strong>Encore\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, his ambitious and expansive retrospective collection celebrating 40 years as a globetrotting live performer, he discovered a reel to reel tape with a Swiss National Radio <\/strong>recording of a concert in Lausanne<\/strong> from that tour. While the tireless troubadour\u2019s original plan for the 3-CD set was to include tracks recorded between 1998 and 2013 in France, Canada, Ireland, Austria and especially the U.S. (where he regularly records), Bensusan<\/strong> decided to round out the 35-track set by starting \u201cDisc 2<\/strong>\u201d with a set of five titles from this show, including two bluegrass songs.<\/p>\n

Engineered in Los Angeles by Grammy winner Rich Breen<\/strong>, Encore<\/strong> also includes a handful of songs featuring Bensusan<\/strong>\u2019s beautiful French language vocals (\u201cCordilliere<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cPas Sage<\/strong>\u201d among others) and wordless vocalese (\u201cBamboul\u2019hiver<\/strong>\u201d); two cuts with future Dream Theater<\/strong>keyboardist Jordan Rudess<\/strong> from a commissioned 1998 concert in Northern France that included a 200-piece children\u2019s choir (including the previously unreleased \u201cAnthem For The Ocean<\/strong>\u201d); and the 18-minute setpiece \u201cCeltic Medley<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d In all, Encore<\/strong> <\/em>features 11 tracks never previously released commercially in any form.<\/p>\n
