With a rich, singing tone and an unerring gift for melody, bassist Etienne Mbapp\u00e9<\/strong> imparts even the most demanding musical contexts with a grace, warmth, and humanity that transcends boundaries, genres, and languages. His gifts have been put to use as a member of John McLaughlin\u2019s 4th Dimension and the Ringers (with Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, and Gary Novak), along sideman appearances with Joe Zawinul<\/strong>, Manu Dibango<\/strong>, Robben Ford<\/strong>, Salif Keita<\/strong>, Ray Charles<\/strong>, Steps Ahead<\/strong>, and saxophonist Bill Evans<\/strong>. Now audiences can experience Mbapp\u00e9<\/strong>\u2018s own music via How Near How Far<\/strong> (available on DATE through Abstract Logix), his forth solo album and the first to focus on his instrumental music.<\/p>\n

How Near How Far<\/strong> also marks the debut of Mbapp\u00e9\u2019s new band the Prophets<\/strong> \u2013 featuring Christophe Crav\u00e9ro<\/strong> (acoustic and electric piano), Anthony Jambon<\/strong> (guitars), Cl\u00e9ment Janinet<\/strong>(violin), Arno de Casanove<\/strong> (trumpet, flugelhorn), Herv\u00e9 Gourdikian<\/strong> (tenor saxophone), and Nicholas Viccaro<\/strong> (drums, percussion). With the unusual trumpet\/tenor\/violin frontline leading the way, the Prophets<\/strong> explore eleven Mbapp\u00e9<\/strong> originals, which touch on a number of international traditions while bridging cultural divides via deft musicianship and a thoughtful, conversational improvisational approach. \u201cMy music is influenced by places I have traveled, people I meet, colors I see, flavors that I taste, fun that I\u2019ve had, and, sometimes, the pain that I feel,\u201d Mbapp\u00e9<\/strong> explains. \u201cWe live in a complex world today.
